Hello!

We are Danai and Nefeli, two Swedish born sisters that raised in Västerås from a Greek father and Swedish mother. 

We came up with this idea after a trip we've been this summer to Skiathos. Our father is a great chef and comes from this island, and our mother is a huge fun of the Greek cuisine and as you can see we have grow up with the Greek taste of the food parallele with the Swedish, in the daily life.

Anyway, the basic from the whole idea was born very long time ago, from the home made souvlaki that mama use to do home sometimes with the unique tzatziki recipe that papa always did since ever, but basically the final feeling came from papas passion about the traditional gyros. He was dreaming all the winder and become reality everytime he land on his island and for the next two weeks. Every single day at least a meal with it.

This year as adaults we've been able to try for first time the authentic gyros and souvlaki and understood what makes papa looking forward every year and not only. Everybody love this kind of Greek street food, from the locals until the last turist that place his foot on Greek ground, and that's why there are so many all around.

 

After our return home we discused the idea with our mother and she was so possitive and happy about it. The only thing left, was to convince our father to help us make it reality. Both me and my sister Nefelli we been already convinced that we should do it here, in our town. Actually there isn't anything close enough except some bad copies to give this glorious feeling of this amazing street food. 

After we present the idea to papa he agried to help us make it reality only if the concept was in the most authentic and in the healthiest possible form, and as an expert on healthy cooking he has to design it him self, on every small detail.

The name it was already chosen by me and my sister so this wasn't under any negotiation, in the same way we didn't had to negotiate the rest of the concept.

So, this is how the Grekenhas born, in the healthiest and the most authentic form, exactly as we dreamed it. 

 

 

During the concepts designing, papa explained every step, based on why we had to follow this way. It has to have the authentic Greek spices, marinates, ingredients but the most important is the Greek spirit use to repeat everytime, and we understood what he meant mostly from the passioned way he express him self, by moving his hands and to see his eyes flashing. He was so passioned about it, we had managed to inspire him into this idea, he was so in it, but Mom said this inspiration cames from the love we showed for something Greek or the Greek spirit we had in side us.

''People need to feel the Greek spirit when the pass through our door'' the welcome that called ''Philoxenia'' and the touch that only Greeks can give to this product, called love and emotion. 

''Greeks feel more Greeks when they are out of home'' papa use to say, probably knowing from him self. 

Not only mama but many others use to tell us stories when pappa was the head chef in the first Greek restaurant in town, ''everybody use to love your fathers creations'' they use to say and was a proven when he use to cook for all the family, not so often but enough to make us looking forward about it.

 

That’s why we created the Greken. 

Not to introduce something new, but something authentic that should reshaping the image of Greek fast food cuisine. We want to make the souvlaki, gyros, bifteki and the rest of our products a part of every day diet, something that everyone can recognise and enjoy regularly and in the reasonable fast food prices.

I'm in the food business almost for the last 30 years from those the last 13 are based and focused on healthy food and living. 

I've study nutrition, physiology and training since 2006, just to understand the way that the human body is working and has to be treated. 

The last three years I had the privilege to work with the Swedish National Golf Team (professionals) on physio training and food (kosttilskot) and that was also a huge experience by working with a very high level athletes. 

 

I came across many opinions all this years and I've tried many suggestions on healthy food, dieting and training until furnish and create my own idea and opinion on this huge subject.

To avoid losing, this idea that my daughters bring to me was something like epiphany. 

 

I always believed that health has to start from home and I've worked on this idea by dedicating work and my book “Right Food Daily” to the ground of “home cooking“, that began as an general idea, become a restaurant and then a concept that still goes on. The only concern was how to find the way to present this whole idea and the concept to people.

 

Let's not be long, this idea about the Greek street food that impress my kids during our holiday's, make me realize that the health I was looking for to present could start from the youngsters, like my kids but instead from home.....from the street.

All this become a huge excitement for me, to try to find the best way to create something so tasteful as it is this kind of street food, into a healthier form, effecting as many as I could, being a precursor on a healthier food making each step at the time to my final idea on healthy food & living.

 

I was so excited and so motivated from my kids because now I should have a strong back up to be inspired and prove my self as a chef, nutritionist and coach together with my own family. 

A family business and in a few words that was a magic feeling.

It was a bit ironic for me trying all this years to find the way to rich people and now it was so obvious through those kids. It really felt like a destiny and I couldn't let it go. 

 

I left again to Greece, directly after and travel from city to city that being famous on this product. Lucky me I had a friend that has rent our family restaurant in Skiathos and own a gyros place as well. He was very surprised with me choosing to do something like that and very happy as well to stand beside me and help me to understand and create the Greken.

 

The concept

Simplicity is usually the best way for everything in life and therefore our concept is the simplest and clearest form and it can be, following the ground rules and those are:

  • Delicious and healthier street fast food.

  • Economically acceptable for everyone to eat and get satiate under a low cost, designed for youngsters, students but not only.

  • Healthier in the best way, using fresh ingredients and making then ourselves, eliminating as much as possible ready made products – food. 

Its a unique feeling to watch people eat with happiness, enjoyment with those sprinkle eyes that can cover any words and that moves me.

And because everyone loves Greece and it's been connected with beautiful memories during holidays but we gonna be here to bring some memories back and present our concept in the best and honest way. You are very welcome to our place to try it!

The story of the name Greken first born in the Swedish National Golf Team from the head coach Rickard Lindberg, a very good friend that admire and had the preveledge to work with him under his commands.
